Generator Sizing Formula

Generator Size (kVA) is calculated using the formula:

kVA = kW ÷ (Power Factor × Efficiency)

Example Calculation

If:

  • Total Load = 100 kW
  • Power Factor = 0.8
  • Efficiency = 90%

Then:

Generator Size = 100 ÷ (0.8 × 0.9) = 138.89 kVA

Why Generator Sizing is Important?

Correct generator sizing ensures:

  • Reliable power backup
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Better efficiency
  • Longer generator life
  • Protection against overload

Applications of Generator Sizing

  • Industrial Plants
  • Commercial Buildings
  • Hospitals
  • Data Centers
  • Construction Sites
  • Residential Backup Systems

Important Notes

  • Always keep 20% future load margin.
  • Use correct power factor for accurate calculation.
  • Consider motor starting current for heavy loads.
  • Verify generator rating before installation.
